2011-1012 Private Commission: In the Memory of Vivienne

In Memory of Vivienne was my first commissioned sculpture. “Vivienne” was born on 19 January 2002 and her parents had had her baptized on 28 April 2002; she sadly passed away on 28 April 2010. During one conversation Vivienne’s mother said, “In spite of everything, Vivienne was full of the will for life—always happy and content in her own little world”. Eleen discovered that although her short life had been ravaged by an incurable disease, Vivienne had caressed many memorable moments through her strong will to discover the fullness of life.

Vivienne’s parents originally wanted to have something special  for their daughters tombstone. Eleen volunteered her services to create a sculpture made out of Prestik to honor Vivienne’s memory.

Vivienne had been a tender, poetic soul and it was an exciting challenge to convey the message of love, hope and life, applying Prestik as the medium of expression. The sculpture had to poetically convey Vivienne's brittle and delicate nature, to reflect the impact she had on others throughout her short earthly life. Vivienne had a rare disease that resulted in her bodily immune system being very delicate and, in consequence, she was in hospital for 90% of her life.

Eleen describes her experience of working on this piece as an enriching, innovative experience . Of this project, Eleen says, “As I was lovingly -labouring to recreate her tender spirit through this meditative work, I became emotionally touched at times..and that  experience influenced my art making in a dynamic way, because the artwork was so personal.. As I visited with her parents to gain a feeling for who Vivienne had been as a person I came to understand she had created her own symphonies, with highs and lows and innuendoes, and she did that most courageously.”

Special touches was made after communicating with Vivienne’s parents to what was dear to her. The work therefore became a bit sentimental but it suited the circumstance and wishes of the parents.

As an artist I preferred the original rawness of the medium showcasing its rugged properties.
